Math 0110 – Mathematics for Health Science

Course Description
Topics include operations with conversion equivalents in standard systems of measurement and the solution of situational problems of drug administration, including oral doses, injections, drugs measured in units, IV flow rates, and pediatric dosages.

Prerequisite
MATH 0100  with a grade of C or better, or appropriate score on a math placement test.

Textbook: Medical Dosage Calculations, 9th edition, June Looby Olsen, et al.

Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, a student should be able to:
   a.  Solve for one unknown by setting up and solving equations using the dimensional analysis
        method.
   b.  State equivalencies between and within Household and Metric systems of
        measurement.
   c.  Interpret drug administration abbreviations that come from doctors' orders.
   d.  Use dimensional analysis to solve situational problems of drug administration, including
        Oral Doses, Injections, drugs measured in Units, IV flow rates and Pediatric dosages.

Assignments
It is extremely important that you do all the problems in each chapter. REMEMBER, you are expected to do a minimum of two hours of work outside class for every hour in class.  Click here to view the assignments list. Assignments will not be handed in, however, it is very important that you complete all homework.

Quizzes

There will be four 30-point chapter quizzes, to view quiz schedule click Quiz Schedule. Note that these dates are the quiz/exam DEADLINES, you MUST take the quizzes/exams by the date shown.  You can however take any quiz/exam as early as you would like (so you can be done with this course as soon as you have learned the material).  The answers to the online quizzes will be posted after the deadline. 

Quizzes will be taken online using the Desire 2 Learn website (see "Using D2L" ). For information on how to use D2L, click Anoka Ramsey Community College D2L Student Help.

Final Exam
The final exam will be taken in person at Anoka Ramsey Community College – either Coon Rapids or Cambridge campuses (if you are not within an acceptable distance from an ARCC campus, please contact me for further instructions). ARCC Nursing Students must receive an A (90% cumulative average) in order to enter the Nursing Program.  Therefore ARCC Nursing Students are allowed up to 3 attempts on the final exam, of which the average will be of the exams will be recorded as there final exam grade. 

Grading
Your final grade will be determined in the following manner: quizzes – 20% and final exam – 80%. The grading scale is:
                               90 – 100%      A
                               80 – 89%        B
                               70 – 79%        C
                               60 – 69%        D
                               Below 60 %   NC

P/NC:
If you wish to take this course on a Pass/No Credit bases, you must inform me, in writing, by Tuesday, June 24th.

Incomplete Grade 
An incomplete will be considered only if at least 75% of the semester’s work has been completed with an average of  C or better. An incomplete is decided on an individual basis.

Rounding:
Rounding answers up or down depends on the medication.  Refer to your hospital policies manual.  In this class all answers will be rounded to the nearest 100th.  Answers in the back of your textbook are not always rounded to the nearest 100th  so you will have to make the necessary adjustments when checking your answers.

Integrity and Honesty
Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. If you are dishonest, the consequences are minimally a grade of "0" on that paper. We may also meet with the academic dean to decide on an appropriate course of action.

Help
I encourage you to work with other students on homework and in studying for tests.  There are free Math tutors in the Math Skills and Advising Center, click Tutor Hours. If you are having trouble, get help early!!
