Study Abroad in China, Fall 2000

Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

The gray sky is normal for Beijing  -- a product of heavy pollution common to all larger Chinese cities.

The vastness of Tiananmen Square is apparent from this southward perspective.

A social protester is detained while the policeman calls for support.

He was attempting to distribute flyers which appeared to itemize government injustices done to his family.

All flyers were collected by the police. It’s illegal for anyone to be caught holding such a thing.

The police van arrived and the protester was whisked away.

Shane’s video of this event was erased by the police but my digital images were overlooked.

This is a poignant reminder that despite entry into the world economy,

Communist China still takes a dim view of free speech.
