Project Description

In September 2004, Anoka-Ramsey Community College was awarded a National Science Foundation Grant to provide scholarships to low-income, academically-talented students interested in pursuing careers in computer science, engineering, mathematics, and computer networking.  Approximately 28 students will be awarded annual scholarships up to $3,125 to offset the cost of tuition, books, and other expenses (child care, travel, etc.).  The scholarships can be renewed for a second year.  The grant award extends for four years.

Goals of the Project

  • Increase participation by low-income, academically talented, and under-represented students in CSEMS careers (computer science, engineering, mathematics, and computer networking)

  • Increase the success of CSEMS scholars through scholarship and support services

  • Assist in student transfer to four-year institutions to continue educational opportunities in CSEMS disciplines

  • Offer a seminar course to CSEMS scholars to help them better understand the range of career options, prepare academically for those options, and develop relationships with key businesses and business people

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for a CSEMS scholarship, students must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or refugee

  • Demonstrate financial need as determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • Be a full-time student (enrolled in 12 credits or more each semester)

  • Be interested in pursuing a career in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or computer networking
