1.       Medical Terminology, 2nd ed., by Marjorie Canfield Willis

2.    A medical dictionary of your choice is optional.

Course Description

The structure and function of the human body are both fascinating and relevant topics.  Every time you read or hear about the latest medical breakthrough, you are learning about anatomy and physiology.  These fields are based on MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY.  The purpose of this course is to enable you to learn the basic structure of terminology used in human medicine and related professions.  Hopefully this knowledge will also carry over into your own health care.

Graded Exercises - Total Points = 380

 1.     The weekly quizzes will cover material from the chapter(s) that you worked on that week.  The quizzes will be timed, so you will NOT have time to look up answers and finish the quiz.  Prepare for the quizzes as if you cannot use your textbook.  You will have 5 minutes to complete 15 questions – most will be multiple choice with a few fill-in the-blank.  There will be 16 quizzes worth 7.5 points each.  The lowest two quiz scores will be dropped.

2.    There will be one individual assignment worth 25 points.  Directions will be posted on the course website.

3.    There will be one midterm exam worth 100 points.  This exam will cover chapters 1-6.  This exam will be held on the Coon Rapids campus and will NOT be open book.  There will be alternate times available to take the exam in the Testing Center on either campus.

4.     There will be two final exams.  The first is worth 100 points and will cover chapters 7-15.  The second is worth 50 points and will cover chapter 1 as a review.  These exams will be held on the Coon Rapids campus and will NOT be open book.  There will be alternate times available to take the exam in the Testing Center on either campus.

 Grading Policy

A course grade will be determined on a percentage of total points basis as shown below.  If you wish to take the course on a "Pass/Fail" basis, you must inform me by the end of the second week of class.  I will not consider giving an "Incomplete" to a student unless at least 75% of the total course work has been completed.  Do not ask for an "Incomplete" due to low points.

The Grades link on the course website will show you your scores throughout the semester and your percentage, which can be translated into the grading scale below.

Plagiarism and Copying Policy

To plagiarize is "to take ideas, writings, etc. from another and pass them off as one's own." (Webster)  This is unacceptable behavior.  Also unacceptable is the use of any unauthorized notes or help during exams.  Any work found to be plagiarized, copied, or using unauthorized help will receive no credit and the student will be subject to sanctions outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

 Attendance Policy

Obviously attendance in an online class will vary from person to person.  Students will work at different times and at different paces.  "Attendance" will be taken by monitoring completion of all quizzes and assignments.  "Poor attendance" (missing quizzes/assignments) will be used in grade determination if you have a borderline grade.

 Make-up Policy

·        Everyone is expected to complete all quizzes, exams, and assignments on the dates and times scheduled.

·        No make-up midterm or final exams will be given if you do not contact me before the exam is given.  If you cannot contact me personally, send an email to me.  In some cases, I will need verification of the reason for your absence.  It will be up to my discretion whether or not you may take a make-up exam.  No more than one make-up exam may be taken by a student per semester.  Make-up lecture exams approved by me must be taken within three school days of the original exam date.  The make-up exam may be in a modified form.

Accommodations

If you need any accommodations for testing, please contact Access Services at 763-433-1350.  No special testing arrangements will be made without documentation from the Access Services office.

Learner Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to:

    1.    demonstrate an understanding of the major roots, prefixes, and suffixes of Latin and Greek words used in the medical and related professions, including terminology of human body organ systems, disease conditions, and surgical procedures.

    2.    apply this knowledge to the interpretation of lab reports, case studies, and other documents relating to medical professions and industries.

IF YOU KEEP ORGANIZED AND KEEP MOTIVATED, YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN A GREAT DEAL OF VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LANGUAGE OF HEALTH AND MEDICINE.  KEEP AN OPEN MIND AND ENJOY!  YOU ARE HERE TO BETTER YOURSELF BY LEARNING!  THIS SHOULD BE YOUR ULTIMATE MOTIVATOR!
