Biol 2113 and 2114
In order to
insure the higher grade in the case of a borderline situation, you have the
option of writing a paper, judging at a science fair, or doing a dissection
demonstration. If you have a borderline
grade (within 10 points of the higher grade) and complete the assignment
properly, you may receive the higher grade.
However, if you have not received the higher grade on at least 2 of the
lecture exams, the borderline points will not bring you up to the higher grade. If you
do not complete the assignment, your grade will be determined by your exact
point total, even if you miss the higher grade by a few points. Try it.
It can’t hurt and you will learn something!
The assignment is due the last day of the regular class
sessions.
Directions:
A. Paper
1)
Locate an article relating to any system that we
have covered in class this semester.
This article can be from a newspaper, popular magazine, the internet, or
a professional journal.
2)
Section 1: Summarize the article. What are the main points of the
article? What is the author trying to
say to the reader? Be sure to give the
author credit whether you are using a direct quote or paraphrasing.
3)
Section 2: Relate the article to information
that you learned in class lectures and from your textbook. How does this new information enhance
classroom information? Are there any
discrepancies between information in the article and classroom
information? Make sure that you take time
to think through the relationships before writing your paper.
4)
Your paper should be two pages in length
(double-spaced) and typewritten. Turn in
a copy of the article with your paper.
Make sure that you include a complete citation as part of your
paper. Evaluation will be based on
complete development of both sections and readability.
B. Judging
1)
Judge at least 5 students at a local science fair.
2)
Write a typed summary of 5 student presentations
and a 1-page description of the experience.
Evaluation will be based on complete development of both sections
and readability.
C. Dissection
Demonstration
1)
Make arrangements with the teacher of any grade -
kindergarten through sixth - to do a dissection demonstration in their
classroom. You may use our lab materials
and dissect an eye, brain, or heart for the students.
2) Write a two-page, typed description of the
experience including how you presented the dissection and the students’
responses. Evaluation will be based on
complete development of both sections and readability.
