Introduction to Business

Course Description

This course provides an overview of the functional areas of business enterprise. Students will apply basic business theories, concepts and strategies to competitive situations commonly found in the business environment.

A critical thinking process will be used to better understand topics such as entrepreneurship, forms of business ownership, management, marketing, accounting and finance, the securities market, the legal environment and international business.

This is an accelerated eight-week course. Students enrolled this semester should expect a homework load that is double the workload of a sixteen-week course.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, the student should understand:

(a) the components and interplay among the major elements of a business environment

(b) the structures and opportunities of business ownership

(c) the dynamics of competing within both domestic and global markets

(d) the current challenges in managing human and financial resources

(e) the design and deployment of effective marketing strategies

(f) the use of technology in business operation and information management

(g) the use of financial information and accounting in business decision making

(h) the securities market and its role in corporate and personal finance.
